This Week's Hamilton Music Listings

It's a bit of a quiet week with the long weekend coming up, but there are still lots of shows to check out.

About the listings: Our music listings are lovingly assembled by hand and are based on the information posted by venues on their sites / facebook pages.  So.....errors occur.  If you notice an omission or error please feel free email me.  whatishamiltonon@gmail.com

NB: Listings do not include cover bands, open mics (although I'm working on a separate list for that) or things like karaoke.

Hamilton Rocks! and there are too many listings to make it easy to just scroll.... so go ahead and jump to a particular day:

REAL MCKENZIES - 25th Anniversary Tour w Raygun Cowboys @ The Casbah

Genre: Celtic Punk!!!
Time:show time
$: $20 + sc   Tickets available through the casbah website (link)
Age:All ages / Licensed

Why Should I Go? Founded in 1992 by the larger than life, punkrock poet laureate, Mr Paul McKenzie, this merry band of miscreants has spent a quarter century circumnavigating the globe to bring the McKenzies gospel to an ever-adoring throng of rebels, scallywags and ne’er do wells. There are not many bands that can boast of a twenty five year career as staggeringly adventurous, wildly tempestuous and utterly death-defying as The Real McKenzies. It would be a serious mistake to write them off as just another Celtic punk band. They are an unstoppable juggernaut of touring mayhem. A ferocious troupe of insanely talented minstrels, storytellers and entertainers melding traditional acoustic and electric to create a sound like no other.

Why Should I Go? With a voice that will send chills down your spine, Shari's singing has blessed many audiences since a very young age. Her presence is outstanding, somehow amplifying the energy in any room. Jonny comes by his talent naturally. Growing up with a piano in the house and many musical influences in the family, there was no doubt that music would become his way of life. Starting out as a drummer and bass player in several bands, Jonny eventually turned to singing as a more fulfilling means of expression. He is now playing guitar although his drumming background brings a rhythmic approach that keeps audiences on their feet. Shari and Jonny are joined by Justin Dunlop for this gig, an accomplished Hamilton Singer-Songwriter in his own right.  A great night of Hamilton talent

Why Should I Go? Calcedon (Hamilton's Brielle Goheen) will be featuring the latest album "Echo In" - this is a fun album, with is lyrically dense when compared to other acts in this genre, beautiful vocals with inventive but easy to listen to soundscapes that compliment her voice rather than dominating it. fado singer Tony Gouveia @ Artword Artbar

Age:All ages
Venue Event Page
Why Should I Go? Tony Gouveia, an impressive voice of a new generation of fadistas (fado singers) in North America. Fado is the urban folk music of Portugal’s capital, Lisbon. Tony Gouveia was born in Lisbon, and came to Canada at the age of 13. He never forgot his roots nor the fados that his father used to sing at family gatherings. His debut fado album, O Nosso Fado, a compilation of fado standards reveals his deep passion and authentic vocal expression. Critically acclaimed by the Portuguese-Canadian media, it won over many new fans to fado. Even if you don’t understand the lyrics, it is difficult not to be moved by Tony’s performance which embodies the essence of the Portuguese soul. His new album, Fado Ardente, recorded in Portugal, offers a blend of new original material along with some fado standards.

Wax Mannequin ft. EW&C, No Mothers, Hanna Bech @ HAVN

Genre: singer songwriters / alt folk
Time: 8pm
$:10
Age:All ages
Why Should I Go? Wax Mannequin:  While his personal idiosyncrasies, lyrical depth and other-worldly melodic sensibilities have kept Wax Mannequin safely out of mass-appeal, they also make him impossible to dismiss or forget. With a name that is muttered with alternating bewilderment, scorn and reverence in galleries, garages and pubs throughout Canada and Europe, Wax Mannequin continues defiantly and indefinitely to bring his timeless brand of strange folk and absurdist pop music to the far reaches of the western world.  No Mothers: Touring with Wax, No Mothers is a folk band from Vancouver that features 2 violas, a stand up base and drums...enough said.   Local performer Hanna Bech is a quirky and fun singer songwriter on piano (and recently guitar).  I've seen her perform a few times and have always enjoyed her performance.
